The purpose of this position is to: • Lead and monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of the Legal Services Unit’s service delivery. • Develop innovative and practical legal options in response to the challenging operational requirements of the QBCC; • Provide and coordinate the provision of high quality legal services to the QLD Building & Construction Board, Commissioner, Senior Leadership Team and staff through the General Counsel; and • Support and assist the General Counsel • Lead the research, analysis and interpretation of complex policy, legal and regulatory issues. The Director Legal Services reports to the General Counsel.

Key outcomes/Accountabilities

The aim of this role is to:

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Practice Manager and the Legal Services Team;
  • Provide and oversee the delivery of high quality legal advice to the General Counsel, senior executives and internal stakeholders to facilitate the management and resolution of a diverse range of legal, regulatory and compliance matters.
  • To ensure the effective and efficient management of legal and contractual risks including drafting and advising on various contractual agreements including general commercial, procurement and leasing and liaising with internal stakeholders to ensure risks are identified, minimised and managed.
  • Support and assist the General Counsel across a diverse range of matters including operational legal, governance and regulatory matters, policies, procedures and risk mitigation.
  • Cultivate effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to foster a cooperative approach to achieving the QBCC’s aims. 

Candidate Attributes

Within the context of the role described above, the ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:

Mandatory requirements:

  • Admitted as a solicitor or a barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland
  • Holder of a current practicing certificate issued by the Queensland Law Society or Queensland Bar Association
  • Fully compliant with all CPD requirements of the Queensland Law Society or Queensland Bar Association

1)     Demonstrated strategic leadership and resource management skills supported by a record of achievement in delivering high quality performance outcomes and customer service.

2)    Substantial knowledge and experience in interpreting legislation and applying contemporary legal principles and practices, particularly in relation to corporate, commercial, building and construction, insurance and administrative law matters.

3)    Demonstrated high level communication, interpersonal, negotiation, consultation and mediation skills with a proven ability to resolve complex and sensitive matters and to develop strategic and collaborative relationships.

4)   Demonstrated experience in delivering innovative and strategic solutions to complex issues and providing advice at a strategic and operational level.
