The Regional Professional Experience Grant (grant) provides an opportunity for preservice teachers to teach, live, and explore a regional community and surrounds while completing a professional experience placement (placement) in an eligible QLD state school (school) during semester 1, 2023.

Recipients will receive a one-off grant to assist with organising placement-related travel expenses (please keep placement related receipts and seek financial advice regarding potential personal or tax implications if needed):

  • $2,250 for a (minimum consecutive) 15-day placement
  • $3,000 for a 20-day placement
  • $3,200 for placements between 25-35 days
  • $3,400 for placements 40 or more days

The grant provided based on the duration of the placement not the transfer rating of the school.

Eligibility for the grant

To be eligible for a grant, you must:

  • be currently enrolled at an Australian Higher Education Institution (HEI) in your 3rd or 4th year of an undergraduate initial teacher education (ITE) program or 1st or 2nd year of a postgraduate ITE program
  • hold a Queensland Working with Children Blue Card with currency during the placement
  • undertake a (minimum consecutive) 15 day placement in a school that has a transfer rating of TR2-TR3 and is located:
    • at least 2 hours (each way) from where you are currently living, and
    • within a priority region including Central Queensland, Darling Downs-South West, Far North Queensland or North Queensland. Select secondary schools in the North Coast region are also eligible.

Step 1 - Organise your placement

  1. Research eligible placement locations in the Central Queensland, Darling Downs-South West, Far North Queensland, North Queensland or North Coast regions (refer to 'documents')
  2. Check the regional maps (refer to ‘documents' below) to ensure the school for your placement is highlighted blue
  3. Check that your placement is at least 2 hours (each way) from your current residence using the RACQ trip planner
  4. Liaise with the placement office/officer at your HEI to organise your placement

Step 2 - Apply for the grant

  1. When your placement is confirmed in writing (i.e. Sonia Online or InPlace) apply for the grant (green ‘apply online' button below)
  2. Once you are logged into the Smart Jobs account (an account may need to be created):
    • in the ‘upload resume' section, upload the documentation requested in the RPEG Doc Checklist (refer to ‘documents' below), and
    • respond to all the questions in the online questionnaire.

Incomplete applications or applications submitted less than 6 weeks before the placement start date may result in delayed payment or payment while you are on placement. If you experience trouble uploading the documents, email them to the scholarships and grants team

You will be advised of the outcome of the application within 3 weeks of applying for the grant.

A condition of payment is to notify the department of any changes to the approved placement particulars (including re-scheduled, cancelled or terminated placement). Changes may affect the grant amount paid or to be repaid.
