The Beyond the Range Professional Experience Grant will provide eligible preservice teachers with a grant in Semester 1 2024 to complete a professional experience placement in an eligible rural or remote QLD state school that has a transfer rating of 4-7.

The grant
Eligible preservice teachers will receive a grant to assist with placement-related expenses* (i.e., transport, accommodation, meals, incidentals) for placements undertaken in an eligible QLD state school in Semester 1 2024. The grant is based on the duration of the placement (to be completed consecutively):

  • $3,375 - 15 days
  • $4,500 - 20 days
  • $4,700 - 25-35 days
  • $5,000 - 40+ days

*Keep placement-related receipts and seek financial advice regarding potential personal tax or financial implications.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must be enrolled at an Australian University:

The placement must be undertaken in a QLD state school that has a transfer rating of 4-7 and is located:

  • at least 2 hours (each way) from where you currently live to the state school, and
  • within Central QLD, Darling Downs-South West, Far North or North QLD, or North Coast (select schools).

Refer to the Choose your teaching adventure booklet for the eligible state schools. Agnes Water, Lowmead and Wartburg in the North Coast are not eligible for the grant nor are private or independent schools.

Schools with a transfer rating of 2-3 should consider the Regional Professional Experience Grant.

Candidates who are on permission-to-teach may be eligible if undertaking an unpaid placement and meet the eligibility criteria (above). Contact the department's Scholarships and Grants team (S&G team) to confirm your eligibility.

Application process

Step 1 - Organise your placement

  1. Select a state school for the placement.
  2. Ensure the state school meets the eligibility criteria (above).
  3. Organise the placement with the university.

Step 2 - Apply for the grant
When the placement is confirmed in Sonia Online or InPlace:

  1. apply for the grant (below)
  2. log into Smart Jobs (create an account if needed) and:
    • in the ‘upload files' section, upload your unofficial academic transcript, enrolment, blue card, placement confirmation, resume and placement reports
    • respond to all the questions in the online questionnaire.

Incomplete applications/applications submitted less than 6 weeks before the placement start date may result in a delayed payment including receiving the grant while on placement. If you experience difficulties uploading your documents, email them to the S&G team.

Step 3 - Grant offers
You'll be advised of the outcome within 3 weeks of applying for the grant to seek further information or to provide an offer. Regularly check your email junk/spam folders.

A condition for payment is to notify the S&G team of any changes to the approved placement particulars (i.e., a re-scheduled, cancelled or terminated placement) which may affect the grant amount to be paid/repaid.

Step 4 - Payment of the grant
Payment will be made by EFT and can take up to 3 weeks.
