Your opportunity

The Nurse Practitioner Women's will provide advanced and extended clinical care to clients, using nursing and midwifery knowledge & skills to provide care across the breadth of perinatal care and primary care including family planning & sexual health. The flexible service model seeks to engage vulnerable women & provide some continuity for women at risk. The multidisciplinary approach includes those within Qld Health & other government departments as well as non-government agencies.

  • The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is the most senior and expert clinical nurse within their area of practice in the Hospital and Health Service. They are an integral member of the multidisciplinary health care team who practices autonomously but in collaboration with others to assess and manage patients within their clinical context using expert nursing knowledge and skills at an advanced level based on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia – Registered Nurse Standards of Practice.
  • The NP is accountable for clinical practice, professional advice given and delegations of care and contributes expert nursing assessment and advice to achieve integrated nursing care within a risk management and best practice framework.
  • The NP will primarily provide direct expert nursing care and will initiate, implement and monitor relevant interventional therapies and interpret diagnostic pathology as part of the role which also includes the authority to prescribe medications and initiate direct referrals to other healthcare professionals.
  • The NP will take a lead role in ensuring targets are met in an efficient and effective manner which will include collaborating with the multidisciplinary partners to ensure patients receive the most appropriate care in the most appropriate place by the most appropriate personnel, therefore it is essential that the NP has excellent communication and negotiation skills.

About the Team

The Women's Health Unit comprises Maternity and specialist Obstetric and Gynaecology services. Over 1400 babies are born annually.

We provide holistic women centred midwifery and Gynaecological care, utilizing a partnership model of care to achieve positive outcomes. The partnership enhances, promotes and recognises the normal process of childbirth whilst being flexible and responsive to change and values the women's right to make informed decisions regarding their healthcare.

We are a Baby Friendly Accredited Hospital, and our service also aims to promote and maintain the health of women across the continuum.

Mackay Hospital and Health Service has six hospitals, two multi-purpose health services and four community health centres that employ more than 3,700 staff. The district covers an area of approximately 90,000km2 and provides services to patients and their families in Bowen, Cannonvale, Clermont, Collinsville, Dysart, Glenden, Mackay, Middlemount, Moranbah, Proserpine and Sarina.
