Program Officer
First Nations Records Access Unit; Culture & Economic Participation; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships; Brisbane
We are looking for an experienced researcher to join a passionate team working in the newly established First Nations Records Access Unit. The First Nations Records Access Unit provides access to restricted historical departmental records, via an administrative release process, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, communities and organisations seeking to participate in the Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry.
It is important to reflect on whether this is the right role for you. It is important to note that in this role you are required to continually access historical records that often contain personal and culturally sensitive information. Given this, the Department prioritises a trauma informed environment that promotes physical, emotional and cultural safety.

Your contribution and key responsibilities
- Undertake detailed historical research in response to requests for the release of restricted records to assist Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations seeking to participate in the Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry.
- Deliver comprehensive research analysis and respond to potentially complex and sensitive enquiries.
- Manage access to restricted departmental records held at Queensland State Archives and relevant off-site storage facilities in accordance with departmental access policies, and public records and privacy legislation.
- Assist in the triage of client requests, negotiation and consultation with stakeholders including Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Indigenous and non-Indigenous organisations, and relevant government agencies.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships and work collaboratively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist with the administration and maintenance of information systems, including data management.
- Contribute as a team member to the planning, reporting, risk management processes and other operations of the First Nations Records Access Unit.
