General Counsel

This is your opportunity as a respected and experienced legal professional to lead a high performing and impartial internal professional legal practice that supports delivery of strategic economic priorities, while protecting the interests of the State. You will use your leadership skills and experience in advising on complex legal matters to support delivery of a diverse range of projects and programs. These include public and private infrastructure projects including 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games infrastructure, the exercise of statutory planning functions and powers of the Coordinator-General, and structuring major project strategic interventions through the department’s industry incentives schemes, exclusive transactions framework and investment facilitation tools.

As General Counsel you will lead a team of high performing, agile and committed legal professionals whose advice is highly valued. In addition, you will:
- Lead delivery of strategic legal advice on issues affecting the department including commercial, contract, construction, property, planning and infrastructure, legislation and administrative law, and the exercise of statutory planning powers and the powers of the Coordinator-General.
- Manage complex and sensitive litigation on behalf of the Minister, the Director-General, the Coordinator-General and other key decision makers.
- Liaise and negotiate with a range of internal clients and external stakeholders (including other State and Commonwealth government agencies and the private sector) and develop and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Work collaboratively with external legal providers (including Crown Law and private law firms) to ensure value for money, quality and timeliness of work produced.
- Proactively identify and manage current and emerging legal issues, priorities and risks affecting the department.
- Lead an empowered, highly engaged and capable team through a commitment to the department's shared purpose, vision and values to achieve high performance and outcomes
- Create a safe workplace environment that supports wellbeing, values diversity and inclusion, and enables collaboration, continuous improvement and innovation.
