Senior Family Lawyer (Rockhampton)

This role represents the interests of legally aided clients and prepares cases in family law and associated matters, while assisting the Senior Principal Lawyer to supervise the legal work of, identify training needs, train and guide staff within the team. This role also assists the Senior Principal Lawyer to identify training needs, create and update processes, precedents and training programs. A Senior Lawyer at LAQ provides strategic representation including early intervention and alternate dispute resolution. This role is also responsible for liaising and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders to improve service delivery for clients and has opportunities to contribute to policy developments and law reform issues.

The successful candidate will play an integral role in the following:

  • Represent clients, including providing advice, preparing matters, instructing counsel, and personally appearing as an advocate in complex family law, domestic and family violence, child protection and related matters.
  • Help the Senior Principal Lawyer to supervise legal work and develop the legal skills, train and guide staff within Family Law Services, Legal Aid Queensland staff statewide, and external legal practitioners regarding complex domestic and family violence, family law, child protection, and human rights practices and procedures and related matters.
  • Provide duty lawyer services, FASS and legal information and advice to clients and the public.
  • Provide advice on and contribute to changes in policies, procedures and systems, and undertake operational reporting requirements, as required.
  • Help prepare submissions and support the Senior Principal Lawyer and the Family Law Services directorate to lead Legal Aid Queensland's contributions to policy, procedure, law reform and legal service delivery initiatives as required.

You will have:

  • You have extensive experience in the conduct of family law, domestic and family violence, child protection and related matters including preparation, representation, and advocacy.
  • You have a detailed knowledge of the practice and procedure of family and related law and are able to contribute to changes in policies, procedures and systems. You are also committed to self-development and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the law and procedure.
  • You contribute to the professional development of others including, providing clear guidance, constructive feedback, and legal supervision..
  • You contribute to a healthy and inclusive workforce and can build and sustain relationships with team members. You are self-motivated and can demonstrate resilience in an environment where there are competing priorities.
