Senior Water Officer (Hydrogeologist)

This role supports the leadership team within Statewide Groundwater, providing expert technical advice on groundwater management across Queensland. Key responsibilities include assessing major projects (e.g. EIS), contributing to water planning and groundwater modelling, and advising on complex licensing and bore log reviews. You’ll collaborate with stakeholders, prepare high-quality technical reports and ensure consistent application of groundwater science to support policy and legislative outcomes. This position may also involve representing the department at forums and supporting water policy reviews. Applications may be used to fill similar roles for up to 12 months post-closure.

The Role:
This role supports the leadership team within Statewide Groundwater, which is responsible for providing high-level technical advice and support on all aspects of groundwater management across Queensland. You will contribute to the sustainable management of the State's groundwater resources by delivering scientific input and guidance to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring decisions are informed by robust technical knowledge and consistent with departmental policy, planning frameworks and legislative requirements.

Key Accountabilities:
As a Senior Water Officer, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the Statewide Groundwater team by delivering expert technical advice on groundwater assessment and management across Queensland. You will build strong relationships with stakeholders, provide clear and timely guidance on complex issues, and oversee the quality of technical outputs to ensure compliance with policy and legislation. This position involves reviewing water policy proposals, identifying risks and recommending solutions to advance business priorities. You will also represent the department at community and water forums, contributing to informed decisionmaking and sustainable water resource management.

About You:
We are seeking a motivated and skilled groundwater professional with a strong understanding of hydrogeology and groundwater resource management in Queensland. The ideal candidate will have the ability to interpret and apply complex technical information to policy, planning, and regulatory contexts, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess and resolve technical issues. You will possess well-developed written and verbal communication skills, enabling you to prepare high-quality technical documents and effectively present to diverse audiences. Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders is essential. A demonstrated commitment to delivering quality outcomes within defined timeframes and contributing to continuous improvement will be highly regarded.
