The Motorway Optimisation team plays a critical role in supporting the management of Queensland's motorway network. The team provides policy, guidance, training, and expert advice on the use of Smart Motorway Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The team also leads the development of future-focused strategies for motorway management, including interfaces with private road operators and the formulation of system and commissioning requirements.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
In the role of Principal Engineer (Traffic) you will provide specialist technical expertise for the design, construction, maintenance and operation of the smart motorway network, concentrating on the optimisation of smart motorway operations.

Some of your responsibilities will include:
• Project manage the development and implementation of complex traffic management systems, technologies, applications, specifications and analysis to enhance smart motorway operations and improve road network performance.
• Prepare and deliver professional and technical advice, submissions and briefs relating to smart motorway operations, including providing advice to smart motorway projects.
• Supervise a multi-disciplinary team to ensure all members are appropriately skilled and utilised and deliver outcomes that support the branch's objectives and strategic priorities.
• Participate in the monitoring and measurement of road network operational performance, traffic demands and user safety.
• Identify and manage networks and alliances of all stakeholders, manage the expectations and issues of all parties, including identifying possible political and high risk matters to ensure they are dealt with in a timely and professional manner. 
• Work with and maintain close relationships with other TMR branches, local government, private road operators, other government agencies and jurisdictions, industry and stakeholders to ensure network performance gains. 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
You have significant experience in traffic engineering, particularly in areas such as Smart Motorway management, Intelligent Transport Systems, and traffic management systems and standards, and possess strong analytical and technical skills to drive continuous improvement in system efficiency and deliver positive network operation outcomes. 

You will demonstrate the ability to inspire and sustain team cohesion, engagement, and performance and foster a sense of ownership and accountability within the team.
You have well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to articulate complex problems and solutions effectively to diverse audiences and secure stakeholder commitment. 

Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the ability to create an environment encouraging innovative solutions and will proactively build and maintain long-term relationships with partners and stakeholders to align with departmental and operational objectives and achieve successful outcomes.

Mandatory qualifications and conditions:
• A degree in civil engineering or equivalent engineering qualification which is acceptable for corporate membership of Engineers Australia.
• Registration as a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ).
• A current 'C' class driver's licence.
• Due to this role having access to sensitive data, a criminal history check will be undertaken prior to appointment to the role.
