Operating from within North Region, you will be part of the departments water monitoring team who operate and maintain the departments surface water and ground water monitoring network to specific standards. The team also collects and analyses data and provides this information to internal and external natural resource managers and planners.

Key Duties and Accountabilities

  • Operate and maintain surface and ground water monitoring networks, including collecting and processing of hydrometric data, collecting water samples and conducting stream flow measurements.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of technical equipment associated with water monitoring data collection.
  • Compute, process, store, manipulate and retrieve ground water and surface water data.
  • Participation in short- and medium-term water related projects on a needs basis.
  • Develop skills and knowledge of the principles of water monitoring and associated technology through in house and external training.
  • Maintain a high level of personal and team safety within the guidelines of safe practices and procedures.
  • Interact with other water functional groups, managers, departmental staff, and clients.
  • Other duties as directed and required.

Role Requirements

  • A manual “C” Class Drivers licence.
  • A current Herbicide Application Licence and a Construction White Card, or the ability to obtain these on appointment to the position, is also essential.
  • The person will hold or be required to become an Authorised Officer under the Water Act 2000.
  • This position will require extensive overnight travel (including travel to remote locations) as part of the fulfilment of the role. This may involve travel outside of normal office hours and/or overnight accommodation for extended periods. This could also involve work in other Regions where camping in remote areas may be required.
  • This position will be required to drive 4WD vehicles in remote areas and in off road conditions.
  • Ability to swim 50 m fully clothed
  • Whilst that position does not require a Tertiary qualification it would be advantageous to have one or be willing to undertake a tertiary study such as a diploma in Hydrography or a Degree qualification in Science, Applied Science, Engineering (Technology) or Natural Resource Management.
