As the second in Charge within the Rockhampton Work Unit, you will report directly to and support the Ranger in Charge to plan and deliver the day-to-day work program in accordance with the annual business plan. You will lead and guide a small team of rangers, inspire enthusiasm, and ensure their safety and wellbeing.
Working collaboratively with other Rangers, volunteers and external contractors, you will deliver annual fire, pest, natural resource, visitor and asset management programs, assist threatened species and ecosystem protection, undertake cultural heritage protection activities and plant and infrastructure maintenance tasks in protected areas and State Forests.
The Rockhampton work unit manages over 50 national parks, conservation parks, State forests and resources reserves in the Rockhampton, Gladstone and Marlborough areas. The position undertakes field work, on average, two to three weeks per month. Working in a dynamic team, you will be required to travel, work and camp in varying climatic conditions. You must already hold, or be prepared to obtain, a manual driver's licence and be willing to travel to, work and camp overnight- at times in remote locations.
To join our team as a OO5 Ranger, you must have the following skills:
• supervisory experience
• an ability to work collaboratively with others to plan and deliver annual work programs and projects
• administrative skills - for compiling reports, maintaining records and using computer systems and applications
• experience managing human resources and budget processes
• highly developed communication skills - to respond to client queries, provide advice and carry out park patrols
• confidence undertaking compliance and enforcement activities
• ability to establish and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including park neighbours and authority holders
• experience operating and maintaining plant and equipment (or the ability to rapidly acquire)
• a willingness to support and promote the interests of First Nations people
While you do not need any tertiary qualifications, a formal qualification in a relevant discipline would be highly regarded; as would a certification to use agricultural chemicals and poisons and possession of a Queensland firearms licence.

Mandatory requirements
It is a mandatory requirement for the occupant of this position to hold an unrestricted manual driver's licence. You will need to provide a copy of your driver's licence, with the original sighted prior to engagement. Employees are required to drive government vehicles, including four-wheel drives as a part of their day-to-day and field work. You do not require tertiary qualifications to undertake this position, however a certificate in Conservation and Land Management or a related discipline will be highly regarded.
