Pre Hospital Registrar

The role of the Pre-Hospital Care (PHC) Registrar is to assist the Medical Director with the development and delivery of clinical and quality assurance systems and processes to ensure the QAS remains at the forefront of pre-hospital care delivery and innovation. The PHC Registrar will receive extensive training in all aspects of pre-hospital care delivery, including telemedicine. They will be expected to participate in on-road responses with the HARU based out of Brisbane or the Gold Coast, as well as the QAS Clinical Hub.

This is a unique role within Australasia, providing comprehensive training in both the clinical and non-clinical aspects of pre-hospital care. This is an opportunity for physicians planning a career in pre-hospital care, retrieval medicine, or for those who have a special interest in the area.

We are seeking applicants who, within the context of the role responsibilities, possess the following key attributes:

  • Demonstrated competency in the following activities:
    • Patient assessment
    • Principles of haemostatic resuscitation
    • Advanced airway techniques
    • Advanced splinting
    • Rapid sequence induction/intubation
    • Alternative vascular access techniques
    • Surgical airway
    • Pre-hospital ultrasound – detection of pneumothorax, FAST
    • Chest decompression via thoracostomy
    • Multi-casualty triage
    • Resuscitative thoracotomy
    • Advanced scene management
  • Demonstrated highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to receive, process and integrate performance feedback into personal and professional practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and professionally in a high performance, highly functional, multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness to engage in learning, both personal learning and the education/professional development of colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and interpret medical literature relevant to pre hospital care.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop skills in effectively liaising with statutory regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to develop a knowledge and understanding of emergency medical systems, and critically evaluate and compare various approaches in practice globally.
  • Ability to develop a knowledge of and be able to apply contemporary pre-hospital care practice, including mass casualty incident management.

The following mandatory requirements, special conditions and/or other requirements apply to this role:

  • Appointments to this position will require proof of qualification/s and current registration under the National Scheme, as determined by the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Applicants must hold an open Queensland “C” Class Driver's Licence (for an automatic motor car) prior to the closing date for applications. Interstate and international applicants must hold an equivalent licence at the time of applying and will be expected to obtain a Queensland Driver's Licence upon appointment.
  • It is an express condition of employment for all people who are to perform roles with direct patient contact to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following infectious diseases during their employment: Diphtheria; Tetanus; Pertussis (Whooping Cough); Hepatitis B; Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR); Varicella(Chickenpox); Influenza. Please note, there may be additional vaccination requirements depending on individual circumstances as specified in the QAS Infection Control Framework.
  • Demonstrated medical fitness and physical capacity to safely undertake all the duties of the position in an operational ambulance environment, as determined by the QAS.
  • Position may require participation in shift work (including weekends), on-call duties and undertake overtime.

Highly Desirable Requirements:

  • At least final year critical care trainees with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, the College for Intensive Care Medicine or the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists at the time of the term. Candidates post specialist training are preferred and encouraged to apply.
  • Other specialities will be considered dependent upon experience and core skills.
  • Demonstrated competency in performing focused assessment with sonography  for trauma.
  • Successful completion of ATLS/EMST, APLS and MIMMS (or equivalent) courses.
  • Capability in utilising multi-media equipment in the delivery of educational presentations.
