Assistant Commissioner, Regulatory Audits and Investigations

The Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) is looking for an inspiring and driven leader to step into the role of Assistant Commissioner, Regulatory Audits & Investigations. Reporting directly to the Privacy Commissioner and providing advice and guidance to OIC's Commissioners and executive leadership, this is a rare opportunity to make a meaningful impact by championing initiatives that enhance accountability and privacy across Queensland's public sector. In this key position, you will lead and support teams of auditors and investigators carrying out the Information Commissioners regulatory performance monitoring functions. You will develop and execute the OIC's targeted and strategic approach to regulatory action. In this role, you will have a direct impact on promoting open government and the safeguarding of personal information within the public service.

The OIC is an independent statutory body with powers under the Right to Information Act 2009 (Qld) (RTI Act) and Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld) (IP Act) to promote and regulate access to government-held information and protect people's personal information held by the public sector.

Our office reviews agency decisions about access to information, mediates privacy complaints, and monitors and reports on agency compliance to Parliament.

About the Role: 

This role leads and manages the team responsible for carrying out the Information Commissioner's regulatory performance monitoring functions under the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act), including investigations, audits and reviews of public sector agencies' practices and compliance with the RTI and IP Acts. 

Your key responsibilities will be to identify strategic and systemic trends in open government and personal information management, develop targeted and strategic approaches to regulatory action, and deliver timely and impactful reports to Parliament on findings and recommendations to improve transparency and the protection of rights in Queensland government agencies.  

As a leader, you will supervise, mentor, and develop a team responsible for an annual audit and investigations work plan, and work with stakeholders across OIC to promote a cross-agency culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. 

You will exercise delegated powers under the IP Act and RTI Act and undertake additional duties as required by the Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner.
