The Strategic Communication and Media (SCM) Branch leads the department’s internal and external communications, marketing, media, social media, and online initiatives, including high-profile advertising campaigns across all DFSDSCS portfolios.
As Director, Strategic Communication, you will provide strategic advice and lead your team to deliver communication activities, campaigns and programs on highly sensitive and complex matters across our diverse portfolio areas. You will share in the responsibility for overseeing the strategy and delivery of the department’s external and internal communications, advertising campaigns and sponsorship across the various portfolios in the department.

To succeed you will require strong team leadership, strategic planning, communication, project and budget management and stakeholder engagement skills. You must be organised, deadline-driven, calm under pressure, detail-oriented, and adept at managing strategic and operational risks. You are a strong people leader and team player, and adaptable in an environment with rapidly changing and evolving priorities. You will have executive communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work in partnership and build influential and productive relationships across organisational and sector boundaries.
Your responsibilities
As the Director, Strategic Communication, you will:
• Provide strategic and high-level communication advice to senior executives to support the department's objectives in the broad and complex portfolios of child safety, seniors, disability services, community services, domestic and family violence prevention and community recovery.
• Proven ability and experience in providing oversight and effectively leading a team to plan, develop, implement and evaluate high impact, strategic communications and marketing activity and campaigns, ensuring output is aligned to strategic priorities.
• Establish and maintain strategic relationships with key department staff, broader government and external stakeholders.
• Anticipate, identify and analyse initiatives, programs and projects, and lead the team to prepare appropriate communication materials ranging from campaigns publications, sponsorships, graphic design, to online content, to support the strategic objectives for the department.
• Actively participate as a member of the SCM Branch Leadership Team and proactively facilitate whole-of- branch collaborations to achieve successful delivery of strategic outcomes.
• Lead the team to ensure appropriate governance of communication and campaign activities, sponsorship, design and social media in line with departmental and whole of government policies, processes and standards.
• Manage the Strategic Communication budget, including monthly reporting and campaign budgets, and identify, analyse and manage the negotiation of major dependencies, issues and risks.
• Lead an effective, client-focused communication team and foster an equitable and ethical workplace based on best practice principles of management. Work with other leaders to build a cohesive branch, including the development of a positive team culture, collaborative relationships and continuous improvement.
