Our Department's Legal Services Unit is responsible for providing advice on all DTET legal matters. The unit also includes the Right to Information and Information Privacy unit. Focusing on ethics and integrity, the Legal Services Unit ensures DTET conducts itself with the highest degree of accountability and compatibility with governing operating and legal frameworks. This close-knit team values initiative, creative thinking, collaboration, and challenging the current way of doing things.
About the role:
As the Senior Legal Officer, you will:
• Provide high-quality and timely legal advice to senior officers on a range of complex issues, including contracts and commercial law, administrative law, corporate governance, policy, complaints, litigation and property law.
• Provide independent, comprehensive and impartial legal advice without fear or favour.
• Prepare complex documents, such as Ministerial briefings, responses, cabinet submissions, briefing notes and detailed advice and recommendations.
• Represent and advocate for the Director-General and DTET through coordination, consultation and negotiation on external legal service providers.
What we are looking for:
The position requires an applicant who can:
• Demonstrate knowledge of legal services practices to effectively manage and provide complex advice on a range of legal services matters.
• Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, along with analytical abilities, including the ability to prepare and coordinate written advice, detailed submissions and correspondence responses within tight timeframes, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, common law and whole-of-Government policy.
• Demonstrate knowledge of legislation to provide effective advice on complex matters relating to RTI, privacy and complaints.
• Prepare advice for departmental officers to ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, common law and whole-of-Government policy.
• Exhibit the ability to build and maintain positive and effective relationships with team members, set priorities, develop sound solutions and contribute to improving work practices
• Demonstrate the ability to monitor and report on new and emerging developments in the delivery of legal services within government.
