DETSI is looking for a Principal Systems Expert (Scientific HPC) to provide strategic leadership and expert technical advice to advance the department’s high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities. This role will play a pivotal part in maintaining and enhancing the department’s scientific computing capacity, ensuring alignment with organisational goals, government priorities, and global IT trends.
The Principal Systems Expert will lead the development and implementation of organisation-wide HPC strategies, manage the planning and delivery of technology services and guide the adoption of innovative tools and technologies. The role will also involve shaping the department’s mass storage platforms to meet the growing demands of scientific data management and analysis.

DETSI is looking for a Principal Systems Expert (Scientific HPC) to provide strategic leadership and expert technical advice to advance the department's high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities. This role will play a pivotal part in maintaining and enhancing the department's scientific computing capacity, ensuring alignment with organisational goals, government priorities, and global IT trends.
The Principal Systems Expert will lead the development and implementation of organisation-wide HPC strategies, manage the planning and delivery of technology services and guide the adoption of innovative tools and technologies. The role will also involve shaping the department's mass storage platforms to meet the growing demands of scientific data management and analysis.
The position requires a strong focus on building and maintaining strategic relationships with senior stakeholders, including government agencies, industry leaders and community organisations, to foster collaboration and drive innovation.
As the Principal Systems Expert (Scientific HPC), you will:
• Lead the development and implementation of department-wide high-performance computing (HPC) strategies to enhance the department's scientific computing capabilities.
• Provide expert advice on the design, deployment, and optimisation of HPC systems to support complex scientific research and data analysis.
• Build and maintain long-term, strategic relationships with senior stakeholders, including government agencies, industry leaders, and community organisations.
• Maintain a deep understanding of global IT trends, emerging technologies, and their implications for the department's scientific computing capabilities.
• Evaluate the potential impact of emerging technologies on the department's operations and recommend strategies for adoption and integration.
• Evaluate and recommend sourcing strategies, including in-house, outsourced or hybrid models, to optimise service delivery and resource allocation.
• Provide expert advice on the adoption and implementation of new tools, identifying opportunities for improvement and innovation.
• Align investments in storage platforms with organisational goals and data management policies, driving efficiency and scalability.
• Oversee the integration of mass storage platforms with HPC systems to support scientific research and data analysis.
• Promote a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace that is free from bullying, discrimination and harassment.
Ideally you will be in Dutton Park however, consideration will be given to an alternate location subject to availability at DETSI regional offices.
