This position is responsible for assisting the Kitchen Supervisor and supervising the kitchen team with the smooth operations of the various kitchen services by performing cooking and food preparation duties.

A cook may prepare and present hot and cold dishes for the young people in our care, staff and provide foods for reintegration activities. They may also prepare and present morning and afternoon teas and functions. This position is required to contribute to the provision of high quality food products and services as part of the kitchen team.

This position will be rewarding as you are contributing to the delivery of services to support some of the most vulnerable youths in our community.

Key responsibilities

As Cook, you will specifically:

• Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Prepare and provide nutritious and varied meals to clients and staff.
• Contribute to an environment that reflects normalised living and working situations for young people.
• Adherence to the security and safety by observance of operational procedures and standards as they impact on kitchen processes and procedure.
• Maintain a hygienic, safe and secure working environment, including cleanliness of work areas and kitchen equipment.
• Prepare requisition orders and assist in the purchase of kitchen and food related stores and provisions and maintain an effective system of stock control, eg recording and stocktakes.
• Supervise kitchenhands and participate in the day-to-day operations of the kitchen.
• Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of the equipment used within a small commercial kitchen environment.

Role specific/technical skills

You will have

• Cookery experience in a commercial kitchen.
• Knowledge of safe food handling principles.
• Certificate II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations).

Further information

• Successful applicants will be subject to either criminal history check or Blue Card screening.
• Successful applicants who are either a current or previous public sector employee will be required to disclose previous serious disciplinary history.
• To be employed in a position, you must be an Australian citizen, have permanent residency status or a visa permitting you to work in Australia.
• Under section 571B of the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003, a prospective worker is required to disclose any pre-existing conditions. Specifically, if requested in writing, a prospective employee must inform the employer before starting the job about any prior illnesses or injuries that might affect their ability to perform the job duties or could worsen an existing condition.
• It is important to note, that false or misleading disclosure under section 571C of the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 will result in a prospective employee not being entitled to compensation or to seek damages for any event that aggravates the pre-existing injury or medical condition.
• A probationary period may apply to successful applicants for permanent roles who are external to the public service. Some roles, have a mandatory 6-month probationary period. Confirmation of appointment after the probationary period will depend on a satisfactory performance review.
• Newly appointed public sector employees are obliged, within one month of starting duty, to make a disclosure of any employment as a lobbyist in the previous two years.
• Applications remain current for 12 months and may be considered for identical or similar vacancies (these may be at a different location).
• Applicants who have been paid a voluntary medical retirement, voluntary early retirement, redundancy or retrenchment payment from a Queensland Government entity are required to indicate this in their application.
