Queensland is home to almost 800 threatened plant species, representing around 75% of all threatened species in the state. We are seeking an experienced conservation professional to lead the development of a prioritised threatened plant recovery program and help shape the future of threatened plant conservation across Queensland. As a Principal Conservation Officer, you will play a pivotal role in delivering priorities under the Queensland Government's Threatened Species Program 2020-2040.

This is a unique opportunity to influence statewide conservation outcomes, work with leading experts and partners, and contribute directly to the recovery of Queensland's most at-risk plant species.

About the role

As part of the Threatened Species Operations team, you will plan and coordinate threatened flora recovery initiatives across Queensland. Working closely with government agencies, First Nations peoples, researchers, conservation organisations, landholders and community groups, you will help drive collaborative approaches to threatened plant species conservation.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading the development of a prioritised threatened plant recovery program for Queensland.
• Developing strategic approaches, priorities and partnerships that support threatened flora recovery and resilience.
• Preparing high-quality scientific reports, briefings, ministerial correspondence, presentations and training material.
• Providing expert advice on ecological and natural resource management matters.
• Building and maintaining productive relationships with stakeholders, including First Nations peoples, government agencies, conservation organisations and community networks.
• Contributing to a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace culture.

What we're looking for:

We're seeking someone who combines strong technical expertise with excellent relationship-building and leadership skills.

You will ideally bring:

• Demonstrated experience in ecology, botany, conservation biology, natural resource management or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of ecological principles threatened species conservation and natural resource management frameworks.
• Experience leading projects and coordinating collaborative programs involving multiple stakeholders.
• Well-developed communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Proven ability to analyse information, solve complex problems and provide strategic advice.
• Experience preparing high-quality technical, scientific and strategic documentation.
• The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a team environment.

Mandatory requirements

To be successful in this role, you must:

• Hold a degree in botany, biology, ecology, conservation biology, natural resource management or an equivalent discipline from a recognised tertiary institution.
• Hold an unrestricted driver's licence.
• Have the legal right to work in Australia.
