The role 

Contribute to the effective operation of Preventive Health virtual care services (Quitline and Way to Wellness) by providing counselling, information, education, referral, and advice to people who contact, or are referred to, services that promote behavioural change.

The Preventive Health Counsellors in the Health Contact Centre report to the Manager, Preventive Health with clinical supervision and leadership from Preventive Health Team Leaders.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored and client-centred preventive health interventions including assessment, information, education, advice, counselling, referral and consultancy to service consumers utilising ethical and best practice standards and policies outlined in service models of care, procedures, manuals, and guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in applying current standards and practices for assessing and treating nicotine dependence (including pharmacotherapy) through active participation in in-house training, and consistently adhering to established procedures, manuals, and guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of assessment and treatment/ support options regarding modifiable lifestyle risk factors to support consumers to optimise their health and wellbeing.
  • Use contemporary best practice counselling, such as, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, and relapse prevention models to increase clients' ability, confidence and readiness for health behaviour change. 

About you

We are searching for someone who:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in collaborative counselling (e.g. Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Strengths-based Counselling, and Narrative Therapy).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong self-motivator to work independently and efficiently prioritise work to achieve team and individual goals within a structured contact centre environment. 
  • Proficient computer skills (word processing programs, email, and client record management) including the ability to utilise computer technology to find and record client and service information during client interactions.
  • Ability to quickly learn, adapt and adhere to best practice models of care and ensure high-quality, client-centred care is delivered in line with workplace instructions, guidelines, manuals, and procedures.
  • A non-smoker for at least 6 months. This includes social smoking, vaping, and use of other nicotine based products.
