Why apply?

Completing a placement in a Queensland Government state school (state school) provides an opportunity to engage with a supportive and diverse school community and experience living and working in a rural or remote location.

Grant benefits

Recipients' could receive a one-off grant of up to $5000 (dependant on the length of the placement) to assist with travel and living expenses for professional experience placements (placements) undertaken on a state school campus during 12 July - 10 December 2021.

Eligibility for the grant

To be eligible for a grant, preservice teachers (candidates) must:

  • be currently enrolled at an Australian Higher Education Institution (HEI) in their third or fourth year of an undergraduate initial teacher education (ITE) program or first or second year of a postgraduate ITE program;
  • undertake the placement on a state school campus that has a transfer rating of 4-7 (applications may be prioritised by 7-4) and is located:
    (a) at least 120 minutes (2 hours) travel each way from their primary residence whilst at university and the host school
    (b) within an priority region including Central Queensland, Darling Downs-South West, Far North or North Queensland, and
  • provide evidence of a valid Queensland Working with Children Blue Card with currency during the placement

Priority region maps are provided below (under 'documents'). Schools eligible for the semester 2, 2021 grant are highlighted yellow.

How to apply

  1. Read the Frequently Asked Questions and the Fact Sheet (below under ‘documents');
  2. Check the priority region maps (below under 'documents') to ensure the host school is eligible for the grant (it should be highlighted yellow)
  3. Log into the Smart Jobs account (green ‘apply now' button below);
  4. Complete an online application including an online questionnaire; and upload all of the documentation outlined in the Supporting Documentation Checklist (below under ‘documents').

Applications will be processed in the order in which they are received and will not be considered unless a complete application is provided.

Grant offers

Grants for Semester 2, 2021 are limited and applications for the grant may cease at any time at the department's discretion.

Where possible, candidates will be advised on the outcome of their application within three weeks of the application submission date.

Successful candidates will be emailed an offer letter and accept the grant by returning the required documentation (within a specified timeframe) that will initiate payment of the grant.

Payment of the grant

The grant is deposited as a tax-free lump sum by EFT into the recipients' bank account. The grant may affect the annual income and/or benefits received. It is recommended recipients seek financial advice from an advisor, the Australian Taxation Office and/or Centrelink.
