Why apply?

Completing a placement in a Queensland Government state school (state school) provides an opportunity to engage with a supportive and diverse school community and experience living and working in a rural or remote location.

Grant benefits

Recipients' could receive a one-off grant of up to $5000 (dependant on the length of the placement) to assist with travel and living expenses for professional experience placements (placements) undertaken on a state school campus during semester 1, 2022 (24 January - 24 June 2022).

Eligibility for the grant

To be eligible for a grant, preservice teachers (candidates) must:

  • be currently enrolled at an Australian Higher Education Institution (HEI) in their third or fourth year of an undergraduate initial teacher education (ITE) program or first or second year of a postgraduate ITE program;
  • undertake the placement on a state school campus that has a transfer rating of 4-7 (applications may be prioritised by 7-4) and is located:
    • at least 120 minutes (2 hours) travel each way from their primary residence whilst at university and the host school; and
    • within a priority region including Central Queensland, Darling Downs-South West, Far North or North Queensland.

Priority region maps are provided below (under 'documents'). Schools eligible for the semester 1, 2022 grant are highlighted green.

All people working or delivering a service in education settings, including schools, early childhood and care services (such as kindergartens and childcare centres) or Outside School Hours Care, will need to have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by 17 December 2021, and the second dose by 11:59pm on 23 January 2022. This includes university students on practical placement, school work experience or traineeship in education settings.

To ensure the Department of Education is complying with this requirement successful applicants will be required to supply supporting evidence of their COVID-19 vaccination for employment to any roles in the designated categories. How to apply

  2. Check the priority region maps (below under 'documents') to ensure the host school is eligible for the grant (the school should be highlighted green)
  3. Log into the Smart Jobs account (green ‘apply now' button below - an account may need to be created);
  4. Complete an online questionnaire; and upload all of the documentation outlined in the Supporting Documentation Checklist (below under ‘documents').

Applications will be processed in the order in which they are received and will not be considered unless a complete application is provided.

Grant offers

Grants for semester 1, 2022 are limited and applications for the grant may cease at any time at the department's discretion.

Where possible, candidates will be advised on the outcome of their application within 3 weeks of the application submission date.

Successful candidates will be emailed an offer letter, a Conditions of Payment, and a personal details advice (PDA) form to complete - which when returned - will initiate payment of the grant. It's of the assumption that candidates returning the PDA form have read and understood the Conditions of Payment. Refer to the Fact Sheet (below under ‘documents') for more information.

Payment of the grant

The grant is deposited as a tax-free lump sum by EFT into the recipients' bank account. The grant may affect the annual income and/or benefits received. It is recommended recipients seek financial advice from a financial advisor, the Australian Taxation Office and/or Centrelink.
