About the grant
The Regional Professional Experience Grant provides financial support for preservice teachers to teach, live, and explore a regional community and surrounds while completing a professional experience placement (minimum 15 consecutive days) in an eligible Queensland state school during Semester 2, 2022.
It's a great opportunity to see if the personal and professional benefits of teaching and living in a regional community is the right fit for you.
Recipients will receive a one-off grant to assist with organising placement-related travel, accommodation and living expenses (Please seek financial advice regarding potential personal or tax implications):
- $2,250 for a 15-day placement
- $3,000 for a 20-day placement
- $3,200 for placements between 25-35 days
- $3,400 for placements 40 or more days
The grant is based on the number of the days of the placement regardless of the transfer rating of the state school.
Eligibility for the grant
To be eligible for a grant, you must:
- be currently enrolled at an Australian Higher Education Institution (HEI) in your 3rd or 4th year of an undergraduate initial teacher education (ITE) program or 1st or 2nd year of a postgraduate ITE program
- hold a Queensland Working with Children Blue Card with currency during the placement
- undertake a professional experience placement (minimum 15 consecutive days) in a state school that has a transfer rating of TR2-TR3 and is located:
- at least 120 minutes travel each way from your current residence;
- within a priority region including Central Queensland, Darling Downs-South West, Far North or North Queensland. Select state schools in the North Coast region are also eligible.

Step 1 Organise your placement
- Research eligible placement locations in Central Queensland, Darling Downs-South West, Far North or North Queensland or North Coast regions (refer to documents)
- Check the regional maps (refer to documents) to ensure the state school/s for your placement is/are highlighted in blue
- Check that the state school/s for your placement is at least 120 minutes each way from your current residence using the RACQ trip planner
- Liaise with the placement officer at your HEI to organise your placement
Step 2 Apply for the grant
- When your placement is confirmed in writing (i.e. Sonia Online or InPlace) apply for the grant by clicking the green ‘apply online' button below
- Once logged into the Smart Jobs account (an account may need to be created):
- under the ‘upload resume' section, upload the documentation requested in the checklist (refer below)
- respond to all the questions on the online questionnaire (the questionnaire pops up after you enter your personal details)
Incomplete applications or applications submitted less than 6 weeks may result in delayed payment or payment while you are on placement.
A condition of payment is to advise the department immediately of any changes to your placement. Changes may affect the grant amount paid or to be repaid.
