About the Department of Education

The Department of Education is committed to the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, students and everyone involved in our schools and workplaces. With over 98,000 employees and approximately 1265 schools, creating safe and healthy work environments requires shared responsibility and active participation across the department. Safe, healthy and supportive workplaces are built through strong collaboration within school and workplace communities. The Department of Education is strengthening its commitment to health, safety and wellbeing and is recruiting Workplace Health and Safety Coordinators to support state special schools.

About the Role

Full-time and Part-time opportunities available across Queensland (Brisbane North, Brisbane South, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Mackay, Bundaberg, Mt Isa, Townsville and Toowoomba).

These roles are suited to health and safety professionals who enjoy working in specialised and complex environments, supporting proactive risk management, injury management and staff wellbeing. Special schools support students with diverse needs, requiring thoughtful, practical approaches to building safe and supportive workplaces.

Working alongside Principals and school leadership teams, Workplace Health and Safety Coordinators play a key role in strengthening safety systems, supporting effective incident response, and promoting positive work practices through early intervention and collaboration.

These roles will:

  • Provide practical, hands-on assistance with day-to-day WHS matters;
  • Support the management and prevention of occupational violence and aggression;
  • Assist with incident follow-up, documentation, and corrective actions;
  • Reduce administrative burden and streamline WHS processes, helping school leaders cut through red tape and focus on leading teaching and learning; and
  • Strengthen safety culture and provide additional professional support to principals and all staff.

This is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to safer, healthier school workplaces.

Successful applicants will be supported through a centrally led onboarding program that introduces departmental policies, systems and role expectations, including core health and safety principles and practical system use.

Refer to the role description for tasks and responsibilities.

A mandatory requirement of this role is:

  • In accordance with the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 a person is prohibited from working in regulated child-related employment unless the person holds a current Working with Children Check clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services
  • Required to work across multiple school sites
  • Hold a current Queensland Driver's Licence

Interested? To Apply:

  • Attach a brief resume including contact details for 2 referees (referees should have an understanding of your relevant work history)
