Yarrabah State School is seeking an experienced and passionate Head of Special Education Services to lead education practices and ensure high-quality support for students with diverse learning needs. As Head of Special Education Services you will have a strong understanding of inclusive education, legislative requirements, and evidence-based interventions, you will build staff capability, manage resources effectively, and promote a culture of high expectations, equity, and wellbeing. Subsidised accommodation may be available. This is a temporary full- time position until 11 December 2026, unless otherwise determined.

About Us:

Yarrabah State School caters for an indigenous student population enrolled from Pre-prep to year 10 across three separate campuses within the community of Yarrabah in Far North Queensland. A Special Education Unit supporting students across all campuses is located at the Primary campus with a specialist facility provided at the Secondary campus.
Yarrabah is located 57 km south east of Cairns, over the Murray Prior Range. Yarrabah State School is a P-10 school comprising of three separate campuses, a pre-prep, primary and secondary department. The pre-prep is located 500 m from the primary campus and the secondary department is located 3.8 km from the primary campus. In addition, a special education unit is located at the primary school.

About the Role:

Responsibilities include, but not limited to;

  • Lead and manage the Special Education and/or Early Childhood Development Program to deliver high-quality advice and support for students with disability, including guidance to classroom teachers.
  • Provide expert advice to the leadership team and staff to plan, implement, and monitor effective reasonable adjustments and targeted interventions for students requiring additional support.
  • Coordinate intensive targeted teaching and case management for students requiring substantial or extensive adjustments, ensuring appropriate supports are in place.
  • Implement and oversee school-wide systems, including data collection and the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD), to monitor and track student needs and progress.
  • Build staff capability and partnerships by supporting access to specialist services and professional development, engaging in school decision-making, and effectively managing human, financial, facilities, and curriculum resources.
