Spinal Fellow - Neurosurgery


Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Herston

With the support of Consultants, to provide leadership in coordination of cross disciplinary spinal care within the hospital, including collaboration with Orthopaedic spinal surgeons, intensive care and rehabilitation specialists. Contribute to management of general Neurosurgical conditions including trauma, tumours, cerebrovascular, congenital and related conditions. Assist in the functions of the Department of Neurosurgery, including participation in an equitable after-hours ‘on-call’ roster for general Neurosurgery, as well as the spine on-call roster.

About the Role

  • Actively participate in the delivery and development of contemporary, evidence-based, multidisciplinary models of care for both inpatient and outpatients in the speciality of the Neurosurgery Department.
  • Undertaking clinical responsibilities as the leader of a high performing multi-disciplinary team, including on-call commitments and after hours supervision of registrars and emergency surgery, liaison with other departments and referring hospitals, maintaining appropriate records and confidentiality, obtaining and documenting consent, outpatient consultations and assistance in achieving timely review of outpatient referrals and elective surgery including efficient management of surgical waitlist lists.
  • Conduct handovers and ward rounds, assess patients, plan clinical management, and arrange appropriate investigations and treatment while ensuring that all discussions, decision and actions are appropriately documented in the medical records and communicated with the multi-disciplinary team, junior medical officer team, patients and relatives.
