Head of Department (Curriculum) - Mount Ommaney Special School

Mount Ommaney Special School is seeking a skilled and strategic curriculum leader to oversee Prep-Year 6 curriculum as the Head of Department on a temporary full-time basis, for a period of 6 months, unless otherwise determined.

Working alongside the HOD-C (Years 7-9), the role leads implementation of the Australian Curriculum v9.0, HIC, and DYL-P. Key focus areas include differentiated planning, staff coaching, ICP development, inclusive pedagogy, and AAC integration.

The successful applicant will bring strong curriculum leadership, a deep understanding of special education, and a commitment to student-centred, strengths-based learning. Experience in diverse and complex educational settings is essential.

Mount Ommaney Special School is a supportive, student-centred environment that caters for Prep-Year 12 students with intellectual disability, autism, and complex needs. About the Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Prep-Year 6 curriculum planning, implementation, and evaluation in line with Australian Curriculum v9.0, Highly Individualised Curriculum (HIC), and Different Year Level - Partial (DYL-P);
  • Coach and mentor teachers in age-appropriate, adjusted, and inclusive curriculum delivery;
  • Support the development and quality assurance of Individual Curriculum Plans (ICPs) and Personalised Learning Goals;
  • Collaborate on assessment, moderation, and reporting that reflects individual progress;
  • Promote the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), multimodal supports, and behaviour-informed teaching strategies;
  • Align curriculum with department policies, disability standards, and inclusive education practices;
  • Partner with the HOD-C (Years 7-9) to ensure continuity and coherence across the school.

About You

Must-Have Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated curriculum leadership, preferably in a special school or highly diverse educational setting;
  • Deep knowledge of the Australian Curriculum and inclusive education frameworks;
  • Experience developing and leading ICPs and using data to inform curriculum adjustments;
  • Capability in coaching staff and building team capacity;
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Skills and Experience:

  • Familiarity with HIC and DYL-P curriculum pathways;
  • Experience with AAC systems and complex communication needs;
  • Understanding of positive behaviour support and trauma-informed practice;
  • Leadership of curriculum moderation processes in a special school context;
  • Previous involvement QCAA processes or regional networks.
