Why this Role?

The Regional Community Education Counsellor (Identified) provides strategic and culturally grounded leadership to strengthen educational participation, wellbeing and engagement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary and secondary students across the North Coast Region.

This role leads the delivery, coordination and continuous improvement of culturally responsive counselling and support services, working in close partnership with schools, families, Elders, community organisations and government and non-government agencies.

The position plays a critical role in building system capability, supporting school leadership and guiding the work of school-based Community Education Counsellors (CECs) to ensure consistent, high-quality and culturally safe practice.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop, implement and coordinate support service programs that promote the educational participation, engagement and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary and secondary students, including state and Commonwealth funded school-based and regional initiatives.
  • Manage the provision of educational counselling and support services, including regional oversight of student case management to ensure coordinated, timely and culturally responsive support for students and families.
  • Lead and strengthen NCR student case management processes, including consistency, accountability, monitoring and quality assurance, with a clear line of sight from individual student need to regional decision-making.
  • Build the capability of school-based Community Education Counsellors through professional supervision, mentoring and structured professional learning, including collaborative forums such as Yarn Up.
  • Support school leadership teams to strengthen their capability to effectively supervise, deploy and integrate CECs within school wellbeing, inclusion and student support frameworks.
  • Lead data-informed decision-making to guide NCR CEC allocation and distribution, using student wellbeing, attendance, engagement and risk data to ensure resources are targeted equitably and aligned to areas of greatest need.
  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships with families, Elders, community organisations and external agencies to support holistic and culturally safe responses for students.
  • Plan, coordinate and deliver professional development and education and training activities that strengthen cultural capability and inclusive practice across schools and the region.
  • Coordinate, monitor and evaluate regional programs and initiatives, contributing to continuous improvement and evidence-based practice.
  • Provide high-level advice to regional senior management on policy, operational and service delivery matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student wellbeing, engagement and outcomes.

This is a meaningful leadership opportunity for an experienced professional committed to cultural integrity, collaboration and continuous improvement, with a strong focus on creating culturally safe learning environments where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people can thrive.
