About our School:

Established in 1956, Hayman Island State School is a unique primary school located on remote Hayman Island in the Whitsundays, approximately 50 kilometres off the Queensland coast. Accessible via a 55-minute resort-operated ferry from Airlie Beach, the school caters to children of Hayman Island Resort staff and resident guests, in years Prep to year 6. Our beautiful School is a small, close-knit school where teamwork, flexibility and positive relationships are highly valued. Staff work collaboratively to support student learning and wellbeing, with every team member playing an important role in the success of the school. Guided by its motto, "Learning in Paradise," the school combines high-quality education with a unique island lifestyle.

About the Role:

In a school of only a few students and staff, everyone pitches in. The ideal candidate can adapt to changing priorities, support students across multiple year levels, and willingly contribute wherever needed. Positive relationships are critical. Staff work closely together, communicate openly, support one another, and celebrate successes as a team. The successful applicant should be able to build positive connections with students, families, resort staff and colleagues while contributing to a welcoming school culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children and support their learning and wellbeing.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff and families.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small team and follow teacher direction.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional standards.
  • Sound organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to support students across multiple year levels in a multi-age classroom setting.
  • Basic digital literacy skills, including the ability to use computers and educational technologies.
  • A commitment to creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Highly desirable:

  • Previous experience as a Teacher Aide or in an educational setting.
  • Experience supporting Literacy and Numeracy programs.
  • Experience working with EAL/D learners.
  • Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs.
  • Current First Aid and CPR qualifications.
  • Experience working in a small school or remote community setting.
