Pathology Assistant

Seeking the best suited applicant to join our hard-working team in Gladstone. This is an exciting, fixed term temporary full-time opportunity 12 months. As a Pathology Assistant the purpose of your role is to perform duties which include receiving, preparing and sending specimens for analysis, computer registration of request forms, processing stores, assisting with clinical pathology duties, cleaning and other duties as directed. This would also include the accurate and timely collection of blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients.

Key Responisibilities Include

  • Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
  • Participate in the Clinical Assistant duties in Clinical Pathology and Specimen Reception including the specimen referral function.
  • This may include such duties as processing samples for analysis on-site or for despatch to other laboratories, entering data using the laboratory computer system, basic quality control functions, loading samples on the analysers and cleaning of workstations and equipment.
  • Exercise initiative in resolving moderately complex or unusual problems.
  • Perform efficient and timely phlebotomy duties in a safe manner. Liaise with patients, medical and non-medical staff to ensure correct collection of specimens and efficient operation of the phlebotomy service.
  • Processing stores, processing and dispatch of referred specimens
  • Work with integrity, complying with expected ethical and behavioural standards, respecting patient confidentiality and the importance of patient results.
  • You will be required to participate in shift, weekend and after hours work in accordance with the award. You may also be required, on occasion, to relieve in our other laboratories, Rockhampton, Emerald & Longreach. 

Key competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use computerised systems, basic keyboarding skills particularly for data entry.
  • Demonstrated operational knowledge of Clinical Pathology and Specimen Reception procedures, and medical and scientific terminology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of blood collection, including procedures to be followed in abnormal circumstances, and ability to show empathy, compassion and understanding towards patients.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a team without direct supervision at times.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

While not mandatory, a relevant qualification would be well regarded
