Key outcomes/Accountabilities 

The Senior Lawyer is responsible for:

  • Appearing as an advocate and representing the QBCC before any Court or Tribunal, including at formal mediations, compulsory conferences, alternate dispute resolution, case appraisals and other negotiations.
  • Conducting litigation matters to which the QBCC is a party, including managing a legal case load, preparing litigation and trial plans, interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence and drafting legal documents.
  • Preparing legal research and providing legal advice relevant to the statutory functions of the QBCC and contemporary, contentious and emerging issues within the construction sector.
  • Assisting in the professional development of the legal team by contributing to a continuing legal education program. 
  • Providing exceptional customer service to internal and external QBCC stakeholders.

Candidate attributes

  1. Demonstrated litigation experience, including advocacy, preferably related to government and preferably within administrative law, civil litigation or criminal law.
  2. Ability to undertake legal research and analysis to produce high quality, practical legal advice on issues of law, practice and policy.
  3. High level interpersonal skills including written and oral communications and the ability to apply negotiation and mediation skills.
  4. Proven capacity to deliver exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders.

Other requirements for this role:

  1. Admission, or eligibility for admission to practise as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
  2. The Commission requires the occupant of the position to hold a Queensland practising certificate (from either the Queensland Law Society or the Bar Association Queensland, with cost to be borne by the Commission).
