ABOUT THE JOB
The position leads a team to research, manage and promote the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collections, Pacific collections along with First Nations collections from other areas of the world, within the Cultures & Histories team of the Queensland Museum.
The role is responsible for initiating, coordinating, and developing research projects, innovative exhibitions and public programs for the Cultures & Histories program in accordance with the strategic and operational priorities of the Queensland Museum Network.
The post will include ongoing community engagement with Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community stakeholders and includes working with Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement and Repatriation programs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and manage curatorial and collection staff, encouraging innovation and excellence to develop research, exhibitions, publications and public programs.
- Maintain and develop the Indigenous Cultures collections including collaborative collection-related research, community engagement and coordination of philanthropic support / donations, in order to meet program and organisational objectives and in accordance with professional standards, current research trends, strategic priorities and cultural protocols.
- Oversee and supervise researchers, students and volunteers in the identification, assessment and accessioning of artefacts to specialist levels.
- Assist communities and researchers to access cultural materials held in the State Collection.
- Develop research projects, external funding applications, scholarly publications and popular literature related to the Indigenous Cultures collections, with particular reference to organisational priorities.
- Lead and participate in multidisciplinary teams to provide advice and deliver high quality research, public displays and innovative public programming content related to the Indigenous collections, cultures and histories. Develop work plans and manage projects, including budgets and staff, for agreed projects.
- Develop a high profile for the collections and unit by presenting in diverse public forums on relevant themes; sensitively and effectively liaising with external stakeholders at a local, state, national and international level; and providing advice and information about the Indigenous Cultures collections to the general public, Queensland Museum and Government as required.
- Participate in public relations, media and institutional fundraising and awareness campaigns to promote the Queensland Museum and the Program's results and activities.
- Contribute to the review and development of collections policies and procedures in line with institutional priorities and the changing state, federal and international R&D priorities.
- Lead model behaviour that fosters an environment that emphasises cultural safety for all team members, and work practices founded on mutual respect, transparency and positive collaboration
- Develop a culture of safety in the team by modelling and safe practices and behaviour, implementing all required procedures, reducing safety risks, as far as reasonably practicable. Undertake all relevant responsibilities identified in the QMN WHS Accountabilities and Responsibilities Matrix
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
Possession of a tertiary (preferably postgraduate) qualification in a field relevant to the position (e.g. Museum Studies, Cultural Studies, Anthropology) or equivalent.
