Identified role: This role is designated as Indigenous Identified.  Under s.25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), it is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

The black&write! Indigenous Writing and Editing Project is the first project of its kind in Australia.  While the project is based at State Library, South Bank, it has a national focus designed to foster Indigenous writing in Australia through the recruitment, training and mentoring of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander editors and writers in the development of Indigenous authored manuscripts.

As the Junior Editor, you will support the Senior Editor, black&write! and Manager, Reading and Writing, as part of a small team. The role is integral to supporting and mentoring trainee Indigenous editors and building effective editorial relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers and black&write! publishing partners.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Senior Editor, black&write! and Manager Reading and Writing in the management of the black&write! Indigenous Writing and Editing Program including administration of the writing fellowships
  • Apply editorial expertise to the development of winning manuscripts received through the black&write! Indigenous Writing Fellowship competition, working collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and publishing partner to ensure manuscripts are at publication standard and delivered within agreed deadlines.
  • Provide mentorship and support for black&write! Editing Trainees and student work placement interns.
  • Contribute administrative support to strategic marketing and communication initiatives and opportunities for black&write! at State Library on a state, national and international level.
  • Work effectively as a member of the black&write! team in the delivery of the team’s operational, business and strategic activities and contribute to a positive and productive work environment.
  • Contribute to the achievement of a positive and effective team and work environment by participating in work area goal setting and service improvement
  • Positively represent the interests of SLQ to potential and existing clients and other stakeholders.
