The Townsville Hospital and Health Service provides tertiary services to 670,000 people throughout northern Queensland from Mackay to the Torres Strait and out to the Northern Territory border. As a health service, we are rich in diversity - population, demography, ethnicity and culture.


Townsville University Hospital (TUH) is the major referral hospital for North Queensland.  Most surgical specialties are provided including adult cardiac and thoracic surgery, paediatric surgery, neurosurgery, ENT, urology, vascular, plastics, subspecialty general (including hepato-biliary, colorectal and breast), and tertiary obstetrics and gynaecology.  The hospital has approximately 600 inpatient beds and takes referrals for its tertiary services from Rockhampton to Torres Strait and out to the Northern Territory border.  TUH is also the main teaching hospital for the James Cook University Medical School, which is located adjacent to the hospital.


Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS) offers Specialist Anaesthetists with a cardiac anaesthesia sub-speciality the opportunity to work in a vital and innovative department in tropical North Queensland.  Anaesthetists here have the opportunity to deliver high quality anaesthetic and perioperative care to patients of the tertiary referral Townsville University Hospital, with a special focus on Adult Cardiac Surgery and Perioperative Echocardiography.

The role requires the applicant to undertake a broad range of anaesthetic and perioperative practice and there are opportunities to develop special clinical interests across a wide range of specialties.

  • Mandatory - Qualified as a medical practitioner with specialist qualifications and registration, or eligible for registration, as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia in the appropriate discipline.
  • Fellowship of ANZCA with appropriate AHPRA registration.
  • All applicants must be awarded SoCP by the THHS Credentialing and SoCP Committee.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work at other facilities within the Townsville HHS.
  • Established Australian Residency or eligibility for employment in Australia.
