The role requires the incumbent to undertake a broad range of anaesthetic and perioperative practice and there are opportunities to develop special clinical interests across a wide range of specialties.

What's on offer?
Permanent Full-time + Fixed Term Temporary Full-time up to 12 months (with the possibility of extension not exceeding an additional 12 months).

Remuneration package of up to $486,763 p.a., comprising salary range of $188,800 - $239,377 p.a. (L18-L27), recreational leave loading (17.5%), employer contribution to superannuation (12.75%), attraction and retention incentive allowance, regional and rural attraction allowance, motor vehicle allowance, professional development allowance and leave (3.6 weeks p.a.), private practice arrangements, communications package and professional indemnity cover.

About the role

  • Provide specialist anaesthetic, analgesic and related services for patients, including cardiac and thoracic surgery, undergoing elective and emergency procedures within the Townsville Hospital and Health Service. 
  • Undertake anaesthetic outpatient consultations, pre-operative assessments and other specialist services as required.
  • Manage the delivery of patient care in the area of Anaesthesia including management of complex clinical situations.
  • Lead education, research and training activities in your department and in other relevant areas of the hospital, ensuring that these activities occur within the specialty and that staff are supported.


  • Qualified as a medical practitioner with specialist qualifications and registration, or eligible for registration, as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia in the appropriate discipline.
  • Fellowship of ANZCA with appropriate AHPRA registration.
  • Proof of qualification and registration or membership (if applicable) with the appropriate registration authority or association.
  • All applicants must be awarded SoCP by the THHS Credentialing and SoCP Committee.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work at other facilities within the Townsville HHS.

About the department
Townsville University Hospital (TUH) is the major referral hospital for North Queensland. Most surgical specialties are provided including adult cardiac and thoracic surgery, paediatric surgery, neurosurgery, ENT, urology, vascular, plastics, subspecialty general (including hepato-biliary, colorectal and breast), and tertiary obstetrics and gynaecology. The hospital has approximately 600 inpatient beds and takes referrals for its tertiary services from Rockhampton to Torres Strait and out to the Northern Territory border.  TUH is also the main teaching hospital for the James Cook University Medical School, which is located adjacent to the hospital.

There are currently 14 operating theatres with approximately 14,000 procedures performed per year. In addition, the Anaesthetic Department provides out-of-theatre anaesthetic support for endoscopy, bronchoscopy, interventional cardiology, radiation oncology, medical imaging, mental health, birth suite and runs the acute pain service.

The Cardiothoracic Surgical Service performs approximately 350 open heart procedures and 100 thoracic procedures per year.  There is also an active interventional cardiology service including electrophysiological procedures, percutaneous ASD repairs and TAVI.  ECMO services will commence in mid 2019.
