Expressions of interest open for the Queensland Species Technical Committee

Expressions of interest are invited from experts in Queensland native species and ecosystems to contribute to the assessments of species listing nominations and the provision of recommendations and advice to the Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Minister for Science and Innovation, on the classification of wildlife under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.

Eligibility Requirements

Successful applicants will have significant standing in a relevant field, be highly collaborative and have expert knowledge of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List categories and criteria.

Although no minimum time commitment is set, it is expected that successful applicants have the capacity to attend required meetings and allocate appropriate preparation time for reviewing agenda items and assessing nominations between meetings.

Committee Members

The current terms of multiple members are due to end in January 2025 and we will consequently be recruiting to fill 9 vacancies for a term of up to 6 years (to 24 January 2031) commencing 24 January 2025.

We are seeking individuals with expert knowledge and experience in one or more of the following sciences for Queensland native species and ecosystems:

  • native wildlife ecology and conservation
  • management of terrestrial, freshwater and marine species and ecological communities
  • botany
  • aquatic and/or terrestrial zoology
  • conservation genetics
  • fire ecology
  • environmental threats and their management

Individuals who have the capacity to provide advice for multiple taxonomic groups will be highly regarded.

Committee Chairperson

The role of Committee Chair will be vacant from 24 January 2025.

If you would like to also nominate for selection as Committee Chair, please note this in your application along with a demonstration of the below additional skills and experience:

  • previous experience as a Chair or member on a technical body;
  • ability to conduct meetings and facilitate discussions, seeking consensus on decisions;
  • ability to act as spokesperson for the STC and liaise with governmental departments, media units and other parties as required;
  • ability to consider all evidence and make informed decisions.

Remuneration

Membership on the STC is a voluntary engagement for non-government STC members.

For members who reside outside Brisbane, costs associated with travel to attend meetings may be reimbursed by prior arrangement with the Species Technical Committee Secretariat. Please note - recent STC meetings have been conducted online via Teams to reduce the need for travel to Brisbane.
