Queensland Food Farmers' Commissioner (Interim)

The Queensland Government has accepted the Queensland Parliament Supermarket Pricing Select Committee recommendation to establish a Commissioner to improve price transparency, redress the imbalance of power between the major supermarkets and their suppliers, and provide a safe environment for complaints to be considered and acted upon.

The interim Commissioner will report to the Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities while being aligned to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF). DAF will provide support for the activities of the Commissioner during the contract period.

As the interim Queensland Food Farmers' Commissioner, you will:

  • Provide leadership in promoting understanding of, and helping producers to navigate, the existing arrangements governing the relationships between supermarkets and their suppliers
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with other institutions, including the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and supermarket Code Arbiters to enable the referral of disputes on a confidential basis
  • Monitor and provide high quality advice to the Queensland Government on developments in the national arrangements governing the relationships between supermarkets and their suppliers
  • Provide strategic leadership in the reporting of behaviours, and business practices adversely impacting Queensland farmers and subsequently Queensland consumers
  • Provide high quality strategic advice to the Queensland Government, in consultation with stakeholders, on policy initiatives in this area, including but not limited to scope of functions and governance.
