Water Quality and Investigations are responsible for the delivery of two key water quality monitoring programs: the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Loads Monitoring Program and the South East Queensland Event Monitoring Program. Both programs aim to assist the increased monitoring and reporting roles of the Department as part of Reef Plan and SEQ Healthy Waterways initiatives. The position will support the program’s senior scientists in assessing and maintaining an established quality assurance and quality control program, the liaison with partner monitoring staff for enhanced monitoring outcomes, data analysis and reporting on results and performance of the program. Some field work will be required during event periods. The work will be conducted in a dynamic, collaborative and creative work environment, supporting creative thinking and respect of team members to deliver on group tasks

As the Scientist, PO3 you will:
• Initiate, build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide professional support to senior scientists, and the wider team, including assistance with the monitoring network.
• Identify training needs and coordinate and provide advice, technical and content support in the development and delivery of training resources/workshops/seminars/briefings.
• Develop and refine state-wide procedures for waterway event monitoring including the application of near-real time sensing equipment and develop and deliver scientific/technical briefings, reports and other resources in a variety of formats.
• Establish and provide ongoing scientific/technical advice and field/laboratory support for Government agencies, and community-based waterway monitoring networks in relation to monitoring design, sampling methodologies, data management, interpretation, reporting, quality control and quality assurance.
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

To be eligible for employment in this position, you must be an Australian citizen, have permanent residency status or a visa permitting you to work in Australia. If you are not an Australian citizen you will need to provide evidence of your residency status or visa, with your right to work (including any conditions / restrictions) prior to engagement. You are required to notify the department if your right to work in Australia ceases.
Qualifications
To be eligible for appointment to this position you must hold university degree (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) from a recognised tertiary institution in in the field of Science or Environmental Science or agreed equivalent. You will need to provide a copy of your qualifications, with originals sighted prior to engagement. Please contact Rochelle Wessels if you have queries regarding equivalency. You will be required to provide this prior to engagement.
Licences
It is a mandatory requirement for the occupant of this position to hold an unrestricted driver's licence, preferably manual. You will need to provide a copy of your driver's licence, with the original sighted prior to engagement. Employees are required to drive government vehicles, including four-wheel drives as a part of their day-to-day and field work.
