Senior Wildlife Officers within the Department of Environment and Science work to protect, conserve and manage the sustainable use of Queensland’s native wildlife. As a Senior Wildlife Officer, you will be required to coordinate operational business and lead the Cairns team of Wildlife Officers in wildlife responses, projects and compliance and to coordinate ongoing and emerging stakeholder relationships, building and fostering Traditional knowledge and culture within the workplace.
The Senior Wildlife Officer role advertised is part of the Cairns Operational team.
The team operates in Cairns to deliver services to conserve & protect native and threatened wildlife and associated habitat—with particular focus on:
• Regulation of the Nature Conservation Act to deliver protected wildlife compliance & enforcement.
• Rroviding safe interaction between people & wildlife.

Senior Wildlife Officers in the Northern Region Operations have a focus on wildlife management. This includes working with crocodiles, cassowaries and flying-foxes. This may require safely responding to isolated and remote situations in North Queensland for extended periods of time. Tasks are likely to include operating communication and navigational systems, employing survival techniques, undertaking equipment repair, and the use of environmental indicators to make decisions. You may be required to undertake short term stays in remote locations with little or no facilities available.
As the Senior Wildlife Officer you will:
Effectively lead and manage a geographically dispersed team including setting priorities, allocating resources, monitoring outcomes, developing local strategies, procedures and practices.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders including other government departments, industry groups, commercial operators, recreational user groups, research organisations and traditional owners.
Interpret legislation, regulations and other guidelines and provide information, advice, and education to the public, industry, and other key stakeholders to promote ecologically sustainable wildlife management practices.
Plan and manage emergency response, critical incidents (including marine animal stranding's and entanglements and oiled wildlife incidents), compliance and enforcement operations and ensure all staff are appropriately trained in their application.
