Senior Criminal Lawyer

As a senior criminal lawyer, you will represent legally aided clients and instruct counsel in complex and high profile criminal law matters, while assisting the principal lawyer to supervise the legal work of, train and guide staff within the team. The role also gives you the opportunity to contribute to improvements to the legal aid and criminal justice systems.

The successful candidate will play an integral role in the following:

In this role you will:

  • Represent clients, including preparing matters, instructing counsel and personally appearing for:
    • Accused persons in all general criminal law matters, particularly the more complex and serious indictable matters, at all stages of proceedings; and
    • clients appearing before specific Courts, including the Court of Appeal, the Mental Health Court, the Children's Courts, and other related jurisdictions; and
    • legally aided parties in coronial and proceeds of crime/confiscation proceedings; and
    • respondents to applications by the Attorney-General under the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003
  • Provide legal information and advice to clients and the public.
  • Provide duty lawyer services in the Magistrates and Children's Courts and appear on higher court call-overs and mentions.
  • Help the principal lawyer to supervise legal work and develop the legal skills of, train and guide staff within the team, Legal Aid Queensland lawyers state-wide and also external legal practitioners, regarding criminal law and related matters.

You will have:

  • You have extensive experience in the conduct of summary and indictable criminal law matters and related areas of law, including preparation, representation and advocacy experience.
  • You have a detailed knowledge of the practice and procedure of criminal law, evidence and ethics and are able to provide advice on and contribute to changes in policies, procedures and systems. You are also committed to self-development and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the criminal law and procedure.
  • You contribute to the professional development of others including, providing clear guidance, constructive feedback and mentoring.
