Legal Officer

We are seeking a highly motivated, energetic and proactive junior lawyer to work with senior legal officers and principal legal officers, primarily advising and representing QCS in relation to disciplinary matters involving employees of the agency who have been subject to ethical standards investigations.
Reporting to the Director, Workplace Law, this Legal Officer role will primarily advise and represent QCS in relation to provision of legal advice and representation for QCS in respect of workplace law including:
- disciplinary matters involving QCS employees who have been subject to ethical standards investigations;
- workplace health and safety;
- industrial relations;
- discrimination; and
- other matters related to employment.

In this role you will:
- Provide authoritative legal advice (both written and oral) in relation to QCS activities and processes, recommended outcomes and decisions, emerging or current case law, legislative governance and risk mitigation. This advice may be in relation to contentious issues, often of a complex and sensitive nature, which may be the subject of litigation, and which are under consideration by the Minister, Commissioner, Executive Team and other senior QCS officers.
- Prepare timely advice, reports, correspondence and briefing notes on legal issues including statutory interpretation in relation to QCS activities and the law reform initiatives of external agencies.
- Liaise with Crown Law and other legal service providers to ensure a consistent, coordinated and effective approach to the provision of legal services involving QCS.
- Undertake legal research, analysis, review and evaluation to ensure that QCS's activities, including its operations and procedures, satisfy public sector standards for accountability and effectiveness.
The essential requirements for this role are:
- Ability to apply objective and sound thought processes and logic to solve legal problems, find effective and fair solutions to achieve agency goals and to minimise risk.
- Able to establish priorities, work under pressure and take ownership of own work while working collaboratively with team members to achieve agency objectives.
- Possess good, clear oral and written communication skills developed within a legal environment with the ability to confidently present messages in a clear, concise and articulate manner.
- Demonstrates professionalism at all times, operating within the boundaries of the agency's processes and within legal and public policy constraints while acting as an effective representative of the agency.
- Ability to build and sustain positive working relationships with team members, stakeholders and clients, treating them with courtesy and respect and being responsive to changes in client and stakeholder needs and expectations.
Qualifications, professional registration, conditions and other requirements:
- Admission as a solicitor or barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
- A current Queensland Practising Certificate is preferred but not essential for this role.
