Full training is provided. No prior experience is required. We are seeking people with a genuine interest in transport and vehicles who's keen to learn, build practical skills and contribute to road safety.
As a Transport Inspector, your primary role is to promote the safety of light vehicle road users by actively undertaking frontline duties and supporting compliance with transport legislation through education, customer service, and where necessary, enforcement action.
Some of your responsibilities will include:
• Providing clear advice, training, and education to the public, industry, and government agencies on regulated legislation, standards, and procedures to support safe and compliant road use.
• Undertaking light vehicle and passenger transport vehicle roadside compliance activities, inspections, audits, and basic investigations, including responding to complaints and actioning potential non-compliance.
• Carrying out light vehicle checks frequently using specialised equipment.
• Delivering targeted audits of individuals and operators, including making recommendations for education or further investigation, and undertaking enforcement action.
• Preparing and maintaining accurate records and documentation. Compiling briefs of evidence and providing informed advice to Senior Transport Inspectors on appropriate enforcement outcomes.
• Undertaking enforcement action where necessary including the issuing of Penalty Infringement Notices and representing the department at hearings when required on matters relating to offences.
• Contributing to compliance strategies, including recommending enhancements to legislation, policies, and procedures. To thrive in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following:
Mandatory qualifications and conditions
• Applicants must hold a current unrestricted ‘C' class driver licence.
• Traffic history and criminal history checks will be undertaken as part of the selection process.
• Shortlisted applicants will be required to complete a psychometric assessment.
• Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment medical and health assessment.
• New permanent employees of the Queensland Government will be subject to a six-month probationary period.
• Successful applicants will receive comprehensive on-the-job training, including training to support the delivery of vehicle inspections, audits, and investigations.
• Successful applicants must complete the Transport Inspector Recruit Course (TIRC), a structured training and assessment program. Upon successful completion, they will be appointed as an Authorised Officer and Authorised Person (without restrictions), enabling them to perform the full duties of a Transport Inspector under the following legislation:
• Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995 (TORUM)
• Tow Truck Act 2023
• Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994 (TOPTA)
• Transport Infrastructure Act 1994.
