Identified role: This role is designated as Indigenous Identified.  Under s.25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), it is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

As the Senior Editor - black&write!, you will be part of a unique project to foster a significant Indigenous writing community in Australia. You will work with a national focus to foster Indigenous writing and writers through the recruitment, training and mentoring of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander editors in the development of Indigenous authored manuscripts.

As the Senior Editor you will:

  • encourage and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers;
  • mentor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander editors;
  • support and work collaboratively with writing sector partner organisations
  • initiate and support public discussions, debates and workshops relevant to the black&write! project; and
  • building the recognition of the State Library’s key role in promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writing and editing.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for the editorial development of winning manuscripts received through the black&write! Indigenous Writing Fellowships, working collaboratively with authors and publisher to ensure manuscripts are at publication standard and delivered within agreed deadlines.
  • Contribute to the management of the black&write! Indigenous Writing and Editing Program including administration of the black&write! Indigenous Writing Fellowships.
  • Provide mentorship and support for the Junior Editor - black&write!, editing trainees and student work placements.
  • Contribute to strategic marketing and communication initiatives and opportunities for black&write! and SLQ  at a local, state, national and international level.
  • Work effectively as a member of the black&write! team in the delivery of the team’s operational, business and strategic activities; and, contribute to a positive and productive work environment.
  • Provide advice and leadership to other members of the Partnerships branch, within your area/s of expertise.
  • Contribute to the achievement of a positive and effective team and work environment by participating in work area goal setting and service improvement.
