The opportunity
About the role
As our Technical Officer (Extensive Livestock Systems), you will:
1. Leadership and Experimental Management:
o Lead the technical support for Animal Science at the DAF Spyglass Beef Research Facility, for the Repronomics 3 Project aimed at genomic selection for Northern Australia cattle.
o Plan, organize, design, maintain, and conduct research projects in collaboration with team members.
o Provide technical support to other research activities in the Charters Towers region.
2. Experimental Protocol Adherence:
o Follow experimental protocols with minimal supervision.
o Ensure accurate and timely collection and maintenance of records for beef cattle and pasture experiments. This entails having technological proficiency in the use of computers and spreadsheets.
o Responsibilities include mustering and paddock monitoring using motorcycles/buggies; paddock capture of new calves and recording of calving data; yard handling of cattle and measurement of performance traits; preparation, feeding and recording of supplement intakes.
o Conduct pasture, vegetation, and land condition monitoring and assessment using scientific methods.
o Collect, process, and deliver samples for analysis.
o Maintain scientific integrity of data, perform data recording and management, and analyse data for reporting purposes.
o Maintain scientific equipment and assist in site resource maintenance and other assigned duties.
3. Team Collaboration:
o Actively participate in a multidisciplinary team.
o Build effective working relationships with DAF, collaborating scientists, technical staff, research station staff, and grazier co-operators to efficiently conduct project activities.
4. Animal Welfare and Safety:
o Promote and adhere to strict animal welfare and safe work practices including in remote areas.
5. Reporting and Communication:
o Assist in preparing materials for project reports and industry extension publications.
o Communicate research background, objectives, design, and findings to visiting groups, including scientists, students, and producers.
6. Supervision and Professional Development:
o Instruct and supervise support staff and manage resources allocated to projects.
o Maintain an active professional development program and industry networks to stay updated with advances in grazing land management and animal production.
What we are looking for (qualifications, registrations, experience)
There are some qualifications that we see as essential. You must possess a:
● A relevant diploma, or equivalent academic qualifications, in Applied Science, Rural or Agricultural Science.
● A current “C” class drivers licence.
