The Director, Staff Support Services is a key role within the QAS, reporting directly to the Commissioner. The role is responsible for the leadership, management and delivery of the QAS staff support service function (Priority One), which provides high quality programs to support the emotional and psychological well-being of QAS employees, volunteers and their families, in line with regulatory compliance and best practice mental health models.

The Director, Staff Support Services will provide a superior level of support to the Commissioner and senior executives and lead the development and maintenance of a professional and cohesive employee assistance network throughout the state, to ensure that high quality employee assistance and counselling services are delivered.

We are seeking applicants who, within the context of the role responsibilities, possess the following key attributes:

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of contemporary best practice in psychological debriefing, trauma intervention strategies and high level skills in managing the mental health care components of significant and traumatic workplace incidents.
  • Proven experience and capability in establishing and implementing strategic plans and frameworks; providing high level policy advice; and contributing to the development of strategic policy and service planning initiatives.
  • Extensive skill and a record of achievement in leading and managing professional mental health care services in an emergency services environment, and the proven ability to capably evaluate and modify policies, programs and services as necessary, to effectively manage people and resources in frontline crises.
  • A superior level of skill in communicating, consulting, advocating and negotiating at an organisational level, and the proven ability to cultivate and maintain productive and influential relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a multi-disciplinary professional team in an environment of competing priorities and needs with finite resources.
  • Superior conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills including a demonstrated ability to interpret trend/output/outcome performance data and provide advice and recommendations to senior executives which contributes to quality decision making.
  • A proven commitment to ongoing personal professional development, maintaining knowledge of current research outcomes in psychosocial health and actively contributing to professional memberships and networks.

The following mandatory requirements, special conditions and/or other requirements apply to this role:

  • Whilst not mandatory, a degree in psychology, social science or social work and a postgraduate qualification in counselling; or equivalent qualifications, will be highly regarded.
