Cultural Liaison Officer Identified

Community Corrections is responsible for supervising adult clients in the community and is divided into seven regions each with a number of District Offices and reporting centres. Community Corrections staff aim to protect the community and reduce re-offending by supervising clients in the community in which they live and encourage clients to adopt more pro-social attitudes and behaviours.
Queensland Corrective Services is keen to increase contact and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, through the provision of more Cultural Liaison Officers to the regions. QCS is keen to ensure these roles are supported and positioned to make a measurable difference to those on Orders.

Do you want to see change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and help them lead a positive life in the community, away from crime and back into family, kin, culture and country? Are you passionate about your wider community and helping to create change across the region?
In this role you will:
- Contribute to case management activities, both directly and by supporting and liaising with Community Corrections staff to enhance case management and cultural competency.
- Work with Case Managers to identify and build their cultural connections in the community to ensure client's individual and social needs are met.
- Ensure attendance at Murri Court and the timely provision of services and advice to the Courts, Parole Board, and other agencies regarding clients.
- Develop connections and relationships with other members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities in order to work collaboratively with Case Managers if issues arise during a client's Order period.
- Work with key personnel to source and develop brief intervention to support meaningful client interactions.
- Support Community Corrections staff to work in a culturally competent way with family members to help support and encourage those on Orders to successfully contribute to their community in a positive way.
- Work with Case Managers to link those on Orders with services and programs to assist them to live a life away from crime.
- Support Program Delivery Officers to facilitate programs that will help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients reintegrate into their communities and family networks.
- Initiate, encourage and facilitate greater engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community groups to promote Community Corrections involvement in culturally significant meetings, forums, events and festivals such as NAIDOC Week. Including the promotion of these events withing the staff group.
- Assist Community Corrections staff to access culturally relevant information that may help support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
- Establish and maintain a network of connections with culturally safe people and organisations within the District to facilitate stronger cultural capacity of Community Corrections. This is also to assist those on Orders or coming out of custody and includes working with current networks (Justice Groups).
- Support management to consult and liaise with key community groups, stakeholders, and Traditional Owner groups.
- Work openly with other team members to share knowledge, advice and best practice in relation to cultural safety and competence.
- Build trust and rapport with other CLOs within the region and across the State (Community Corrections and Custodial Centres) and undertake appropriate information sharing, to enhance contact and service delivery.
- Provide service-related reports and documents to the District Manager and Regional Manager as required.
