The Parole Board Queensland is established under the Corrective Services Act 2006 and performs its functions alongside other Queensland criminal justice agencies to protect the public by making transparent and accountable parole decisions that upholds public confidence in the justice system. The Board’s work is of critical importance to both the broader justice system and also, the individuals who come in contact with the system, including individual prisoners, victims and their families.

The Deputy President's functions include:

  • Support the President in strategically leading the Parole Board Queensland to advance the priorities of the Queensland Government, with a focus on community safety, reducing crime victimisation, and ensuring the integrity of parole decisions; 
  • Assist in promoting the efficient and effective operation of the Board, contributing to the development and implementation of robust, evidence-informed legal, policy, and administrative frameworks;
  • Lead stakeholder engagement efforts to integrate services and strengthen collaboration across the criminal justice system;
  • Operationally lead a team of members and chair meetings to ensure evidence based, transparent, consistent, and human rights-compliant parole decisions are made in accordance with Chapter 5 (Parole) of the Corrective Services Act 2006 and the Human Rights Act 2019, with regard to Part 2, Division 2 (Civil and Political Rights); 
  • Support the President in fostering a culture of integrity, openness, and psychological safety for Board members and Secretariat staff;
  • Assist in identifying and managing risks to Board operations and contribute to transparent reporting on parole system outcomes; and
  • Undertake professional duties in accordance with the Board's Code of Conduct.

We are seeking suitably qualified candidates with extensive, collaborate leadership capability to work in partnership with QCS and other key stakeholders to provide an efficient and effective parole system that contributes to community safety and public confidence. The Deputy President as a senior member of the Parole Board, will visibly lead a professional and supportive culture that demonstrates respect and inclusion, actively managing member wellbeing and continuous improvements to systems, processes and relationships across the justice system. 

The Deputy President of the Board is appointed by the Governor-in-Council and must be either a former judge of a State court, the High Court or a court constituted under a Commonwealth Act; a former magistrate; or must have qualifications, experience or standing that would be considered equivalent. The Board is supported in the delivery of its statutory functions by a Secretariat let by a Chief Administrative Officer.
