Audio Visual Coordinator


The Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) seeks an Audio-Visual Coordinator to manage successful audio-visual outcomes for exhibitions and displays, and maintain & develop an inventory of audio-visual equipment to service the immediate and longer-term needs of the Gallery. This role sits in the Design Section, reporting to the Design Manager and works closely with Exhibition Design, Web and Multimedia, Installation and Information Management and Technology teams. This role supervises a number of casual and full-time audio-visual staff engaged in response to the installation and maintenance requirements of the Gallerys exhibition and display program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing audio-visual solutions for the exhibition of artworks from the Collection and on loan to the Gallery, interactive audience experiences and digital signage and wayfinding.
  • Working independently and in teams to provide audio-visual design and specification advice and documentation as required to exhibition design project teams within this section.
  • Providing instruction and guidance to installation and workshop staff relating to audio visual installations.
  • Maintaining and managing the storage and tracking the Gallery's inventory of audio-visual equipment including preserving technology that is specifically required for audio visual-works in the Collection.
  • Engaging in strategic planning, forecasting future audio-visual requirements, identifying opportunities to procure new equipment ensuring that it will be adaptable across multiple exhibition programs. Providing input into project and operational budgets accordingly.
  • Building and maintaining a network of contacts with suppliers and other arts institutions to ensure that the Gallery remains up to date with emerging technologies and products.
  • Liaising with project stakeholders including artists, curators and external lenders and engaging critically with audio-visual specifications to ensure that stakeholder expectations are balanced with available Gallery equipment, budget, safety and quality of presentation.
  • Managing and coordinating full-time and casual audio-visual installation staff including rostering, task allocation, supervision and training. Identifying opportunities to assist with installation activities, determining the appropriate balance of time between desk and floor work in consultation with manager.
  • Developing operation manuals including troubleshooting guidelines for exhibitions and installation manuals for audio-visual collection works ensuring clear communication and appropriate level of detail for end-users.
  • Assessing and managing risk for all projects including managing the safety of the public, Gallery staff and artworks. Implementing workplace health and safety policy within the section and developing and maintaining work method statements for all typical installation activities reflecting best WH&S practice.

Technical qualifications and experience:

A diploma, advanced diploma (or higher qualifications) related to digital and interactive media, audio visual technology & engineering or agreed equivalent industry experience is mandatory for this position.

Strongly developed knowledge of industry practices and standards pertaining to the management, development, and maintenance of audio visual and systems within an art museum context will be well regarded.
