We are seeking a highly motivated, energetic and proactive junior lawyer to work with senior legal officers and principal legal officers, primarily advising and representing QCS in relation to disciplinary matters involving employees of the agency who have been subject to ethical standards investigations.
Reporting to the Director, Workplace Law, this Junior Legal Officer role will primarily advise and represent QCS in relation to provision of legal advice and representation for QCS in respect of workplace law including:
• disciplinary matters involving QCS employees who have been subject to ethical standards investigations;
• workplace health and safety;
• industrial relations;
• discrimination; and
• other matters related to employment.

In this role you will:
- Participate in the provision of legal advice and assistance (both written and oral) in relation to disciplinary matters involving QCS staff and processes, recommended outcomes and decisions, emerging or current case law, legislative governance and risk mitigation.
- Assist more senior legal officers through professional maturity, sensitivity and understanding of agency context when dealing with matters that are often contentious, of a complex and sensitive nature and which may be the subject of litigation, which are under consideration by the Minister, Commissioner, Executive Team and other senior QCS officers.
- Prepare timely advice, reports, correspondence and briefing notes on legal issues including statutory interpretation in relation to QCS activities and the law reform initiatives of external agencies to support more senior legal officers.
- Under supervision, liaise with Crown Law and other legal service providers to ensure a consistent, coordinated and effective approach to the provision of legal services to QCS with respect to disciplinary matters.
- Undertake legal research, analysis, review and evaluation to ensure that QCS' approach to discipline processes satisfies public sector standards for accountability and effectiveness that can be used to form legal views/opinions to support the work of the Command.
- Build co-operative relationships with stakeholders such as the offices of the Deputy Commissioners, Employee Relations group and Public Service Commission to assist in determining internal precedents, protocols and lessons learnt, to support the determination of consistent, defendable and fair outcomes from discipline processes.
