Court Advisory Services is a pilot program in response to the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce, Hear her voice – Report Two recommendation 130 “Queensland Corrective Services develop and implement a plan for the sustainable expansion of court advisory services across Queensland to support greater use of pre-sentence reports”.
The purpose of the pilot is to ensure the magistrates have access to relevant information about an individual to make an informed sentencing decision. In some cases, this additional information will enable magistrates to consider community-based orders which would enable people to address their criminogenic needs in the community rather than in custody.

About the Role:
In this role you will report to the Team Leader and will be responsible for providing accurate and consistent information and pre-sentence advice to the courts on the suitability of offenders for community-based orders, build the cultural capabilities of the team to enhance engagement with First Nations peoples, and represent QCS in prosecuting community-based order contraventions in the magistrate's court.
The primary accountabilities of the Adviser (Identified) include:
- Provide timely, accurate and consistent information and advice to courts in relation to offenders, sentencing options, Agency programs and rehabilitation options.
- Liaise with relevant stakeholders such as: First Nations agencies, Queensland Police Service (QPS), Department of Justice (DOJ) staff, legal representatives, and other community agencies, to provide advice to the courts.
- Interview and assess offenders for suitability for community-based orders.
- Provide high quality oral and written pre-sentence reports to the courts, including Murri court.
- Maintain high quality records on QCS systems, including results of advice given in court and court outcomes.
- Ensure service delivery is aligned with trauma-informed practice principles.
- Ensure all service delivery is culturally appropriate, respecting and valuing diverse backgrounds and the needs of First Nations people.
- Prioritise and manage daily tasks in a fast-paced environment, to meet QCS service standards and judiciary timeframes.
- Collect, prepare and review documentation forwarded to court advisory services for prosecution.
- Ensure documentation meets legal requirements.
- Confirm the information provided by an offender, before submitting as pre-sentence advice.
- Liaise with relevant stakeholders to gather relevant information (pertaining to the offender or regarding program availability) for the courts.
- Maintain contemporary knowledge of relevant legislation for QCS.
- Collaborate with the Partnership Coordinator to ensure the Enhanced Court Advisory Service is informed of programs and supports available in the community.
- Model and demonstrate professional presentation and behaviour aligned to the standards of conduct for Queensland Public Service employees.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as directed, adhering to professional standards and organisational objectives.
