Search tips

Read these tips to help you get better results from your job search. In addition to selecting location, organisation and/or classification you can also enter one or more keywords and the job search will find jobs based on your criteria.

It is important to note that job titles and functions may vary between government and the private sector and therefore we recommend using a variety of keywords, e.g. Payroll or Finance.

Job search will also allow you to include, exclude or even match words together.

Search tip Description
What is a keyword? Using keywords can help narrow your search results. A keyword is any word you wish to pinpoint in your search. It may be a skill you have, a company you wish to work for, or the name of a particular project you want to look for.

Spaces and case sensitive Leave one space only between words and do not include commas (,). The search field is not case sensitive.

Include a keyword To include a word in your search, place a plus sign (+) directly in front of the word you wish to include. Do not leave a space between the plus sign and the word, i.e. Accounting +Management.

Exclude a keyword To exclude a word from your search, place a minus (-) sign directly in front of the word you wish to exclude. Do not leave a space between the minus sign and the word, i.e. Accounting -Management. Please place all exclude keywords at the end of your list!

Match words that must appear together To search for two words together, place double quotes (" ") around the words, i.e. "Accounts Clerk".

Intelligent Alias Matching This site has an Intelligent Alias Matching system that looks for and matches all commonly used/abbreviated terminology to ensure you get the maximum results to your search. For example, if you run a search for Accounts Receivable, the search will look for accounts rec and acct rec.

Category This is a comprehensive list of job categories. Choose one or multiple categories that most suit your experience. If no categories are selected then the search will return results against all the categories.

Title When entering words for a job title, the search will look at each word individually and bring back results where those words appear either collectively or individually.

Job Ad Reference If you already have a Job Ad Reference for a specific job, enter it here to speed up your search.

Salary When entering figures into the search fields you have 2 options: either enter a salary range which will return vacancies that fall ‘on or within’ the range identified; or alternately select one amount only which will return all vacancies that are ‘on or above’ the amount entered. Please only use numbers when entering salary amounts, do not use any symbols e.g.'$' or ','. All salary figures are specified in Australian dollars ($AU).

The meaning of the recorded salary for a job may vary between organisations and classification types. For some jobs, the recorded amount is the total remuneration figure. In most cases, however, the recorded job salary does not include superannuation and other employee benefits, which can often be 15% extra. Please be aware that for many advertised jobs, the total remuneration benefit that the employee actually receives could be significantly higher that the advertised amount. Due to the variability of formats between organisations and classifications, you will need to look in the actual job details to determine the specific conditions.

When searching for jobs by salary, you may wish to enter a slightly lower salary search criterion (e.g. 20000 rather than 23000). This is one way of catering for the extra benefits that many jobs provide.
